Frequently Asked Questions
Who reviews my scans?
A board-certified dermatologist reviews all scans and provides a full dermatologic assessment.
The dermatologist will also assist you in monitoring your skin health including recommending the cadence for future visits and, if necessary, advising on further testing or treatment.

What does a SkinBit assessment include?
Your visit is a 20-minute, in-person imaging session run by a trained technician — you don't need a dermatologist appointment to be scanned. Afterward, a board-certified dermatologist reviews your images and delivers a written assessment in the SkinBit app, typically within 48 hours. If you'd like to talk it through — or if the dermatologist flags something worth discussing — you can request a call or video consult with a SkinBit dermatologist. If follow-up or a biopsy is recommended, we'll connect you with a local dermatologist from our network or refer you to a dermatologist of your choosing.
Will I speak with the dermatologist?
Your results come first as a written assessment in the SkinBit app. From there you can request a call or video consult with a SkinBit dermatologist to discuss them. If something needs attention, we'll help arrange follow-up with a local dermatologist or one of your choosing.
What if something needs a biopsy?
If further treatments or examinations are necessary, SkinBit will refer you to our local network of dermatologists for priority treatment, or to a dermatologist or physician of your choosing.
Is SkinBit a medical service?
SkinBit records and provides data on your skin health and offers advice on further treatment in cases where that is deemed necessary. We do not provide medical care. After your scan you will have full access to your SkinBit data which you can take to a dermatologist or physician of your choosing.
Can I take my record to my own doctor?
Yes, you have complete ownership of all data recorded during your SkinBit session, and it is made readily available for you to keep as your own record and share with your medical care professional.
Is SkinBit HIPAA compliant?
Yes, SkinBit is built to be completely HIPAA-compliant, with patient consent, data security, and patient data ownership designed to meet the standards of an enterprise and health-system partner network.
Is there any danger of radiation or UV exposure during a SkinBit exam?
No. Unlike a CT scan or X-Ray, SkinBit does not use radiation or UV rays during its scans. SkinBit utilizes a precision, high-resolution camera as well as controlled visible light that is safe for repeated visits and poses no threat to long term health.
How is my data stored and made available?
All your data are encrypted in our servers and can only be seen by you or your doctor. You are able to access and share your data through your SkinBit account via our mobile application or website.
What if my membership lapses? Is all my data lost?
Once your membership lapses, your historical data is yours and you can download it whenever you want for a period of time after the end of your membership.
Do you take insurance?
The SkinBit membership is not covered by any insurance but is FSA/HSA eligible. Some other SkinBit dermatologic care delivery service may be covered. We do not participate in any insurance plans.
Do I need to see my dermatologist or doctor for a referral prior to visiting Skinbit?
No, you do not need a referral. You can sign up and schedule your scan at your convenience.
Do I need to be naked for my exam?
You can be as covered or uncovered as you wish. Please note that the camera can only see skin that it interacts with directly, so uncover all areas you want scanned.
You will be given a robe after changing out of your clothes and will be alone in the room for the scan, paging the technician remotely when you are ready to start.
We recommend that you also remove any makeup. A changing space is available in your room for easy dressing, including a space to reapply makeup
